I’ve been intensively using my iPhone 3G for 18 months now, carrying it in my pocket without protective case and scrolling A LOT in Safari, NetNewsWire and Instapaper.
There is absolutely no scratch on the screen.
Why did you buy a protective case?

I totally agree with you. At least for screen protectors. But you can still damage your phone if it falls in the street.
